Actually, there is some linguistic evidence that that IS the original form of 
"ozark". Remember that the first explorers through these parts were French, 
hence:

Petit Jean Mountain
Bois d'Arc trees 
Ouachita (river and highlands)
L'Anguille River (we crossed it on I-40 on the way to OVFF)
even the Arkansas river's name originated as a French spelling (I can't help 
it if those prairie dwellers upstream have forgotten how to pronounce the 
word properly)
