I can only relate my own experiences and emotions. They aren't going to
work for everyone. But to shrug and say "It just doesn't work that way" is
tantamount to giving up. And *I* am not wired /THAT/ way.
I'm as stubborn as a mule. And I learned a long time ago that the opinion
of someone who I consider an inferior (mentally or morally, or what have
you) is just random noise. It may sting, but it cannot penetrate my
skin. Of course, there's a danger here -- the disapproval of someone whose
opinion I do respect can be a nearly mortal blow.
But to me, and perhaps me only, one of the surest recipes for misery is to
depend on others for your happiness. "Though we search the world for
beauty, we must find it within ourselves, or we shall find it not." (Emerson)
Your mileage, may very well, of course, vary tremendously.
