There's an annual television show called the Eurovision Song Contest (it's
on this Saturday). Someone's bright idea to promote European harmony by
having a pop-song contest with one representative group from each nation.

The harmony works about as well as in the Olympics - massive tactical and
political voting (each country casts a number of votes for each other
country). So they cast "null points" for anyone they don't currently like.
And the songs are all extremely bland.

In 95 we had a Eurovision Filk Contest - one song from each country
including several imaginary countries. And then the judges awarded null
points to *every* contestant, and declared the audience the winners for
having sung Happy Birthday to someone earlier.

Generally an excuse for extreme silliness.

I'm not sure myself what this was. Lissa?

We've had some very successful ones over here recently, but the biggest
complaint was not having enough time to rehearse. So the idea was to try it
when there's much more possible time available.

Different mix of people and experience I suppose, but I think it could work
very well, especially if we get plenty of the Germans over.

I expect so - that's what was in the transcribed notes that I copied in.

Filk performed in costume related in some way to the song.

Happened a few times at early UK filk cons, though I don't remember it
recently. For instance at the first one DJ won dressed as Inigo for a song
about him, and at the second she won for doing the face paint for several
people for a cat song.
