I once heard of a form of song where the events are not detailed because they are common to everyone, that everyone understands what is happening, and the song is about the events (at a once removed distance, like how they felt) without explaining what is common knowledge. Like some black spirituals singing about the bible without detailing it. This knowledge has been perilous. Every time I tried to do such a song, I got jumped on because I did not detail the events well enough for most to figure out what I was talking about. No doubt that this is like the saying "accelerate into a turn to keep traction". Took me years to find when to use this, and the many ways not to use this. I had given up, and found its use by accident (for once no collision, no hurt, for once pun not intended - some know my driving record and need the reassurance). I know which parts I think need work, but I'd like to hear what other people say. ***** THE SMILE IN YOUR EYES Words & Music © 2001 David Weingart Once lover, now a friend at heart You've given me a second start I can't regret it, and I won't apologize And I will not forget it, the smile in your eyes What is it here that makes you scared? You wonder why it is I care Don't ever doubt it while the sun is in the sky I can read all about it in the smile in your eyes I don't stop to wonder what connects us, you and me No more than the thunder can distract the rolling sea Still there's something special which I can't and don't deny I feel it in the laughter and the smile in your eyes You stand there silent and amazed And understand me when I say That a friend who will hold you is a gem beyond all price For the things they have told you and the smile in their eyes -- 73 de Dave Weingart KA2ESK "They reached for tomorrow, but tomorrow's mailto:phydeaux@liii.com more of the same.
