[ba-filk-announce] Reminder: Filk tape restoration party in Mountain View thisSaturday - 1:00 PM

Hi, everyone --

This is a reminder that you're all invited to participate in the
first-ever out-of-print filk tape restoration party in downtown Mountain
View this Saturday. It'll be at 1:00 PM.

If you'd like to attend, please RSVP with your expected time of arrival,
and I'll send you directions. Pizza will likely be served.

    Best,

    Eli

WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?:

Most of you have out-of-print filk albums on cassette. It's harder and
harder to find a cassette player, and if your tapes are like mine, they're
starting to wear out from age.

Wouldn't it be great to be able to back up your filk tapes onto a more
permanent medium, so that you can enjoy them whenever you'd like, and
without having to worry about their eventual demise?

But it's a time-consuming to learn how to do this on your own. So I'm
inviting you all to come over and back them up in an assisted environment
with all the equipment and assistance you'll need available to you.

COOL! HOW WOULD THIS WORK?:

* You'll provide proof of ownership. We'll confirm that the album is
out-of-print, remains unavailable for purchase in CD format, and is
unlikely to be released in the near-future. We're only doing this for your
filk tapes, not for mundane music.

* I'll provide the facilities with which you can easily make a backup
digital transfer of out-of-print filk albums which you have paid for and
own.

* I won't be taking any compensation, such as reimbursement for blank media
that you use in backups. If you'd like, bring your own blank CD-Rs (or a
Firewire hard drive, like an iPod) if you have many tapes you'd like to back
up.

* You'll be the party backing up your own cassettes. I will be providing the
blank CD-R media, the facilities, and any informational assistance you may
need. I won't be creating any actual backups for you.

* As you'd expect, this won't be a "pirating" or "music stealing" session
for out-of-print filk - no laws will be broken. You'll only be making a
single archival backup for your personal use, and only of out-of-print
cassettes for which you can demonstrate your ownership.
