FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MARS SOCIETY HOSTS INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION

Scientists and enthusiasts from all walks of life gather to discuss the
human exploration and settlement of Mars.

Stanford, CA -- The Mars Society is hosting its Fourth International
Convention here, August 23rd through the 26th, to provide a forum for
promoting and discussing the technology, science, and social implications of
Mars exploration and settlement.

The Mars Society is an international grassroots organization created to
further the goal of the exploration of the planet Mars. With 100% private
funding, the Society has developed a research facility in the Canadian
Arctic, called the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station, which is as near
to a "Mars-on-Earth" environment as possible. This station, soon to be
joined by a new facility being built in the American Southwest, serves as a
test-bed for technologies and practices that will be needed for pioneering
the Red Planet.

Kids age 8 and up are invited to join Space Camp and the Mars Society's free
interactive Mars workshop, to be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Come learn more about our neighboring Red Planet with Space Camp, one of the
Nation's leaders in space education for kids. Create your own Mars Rover,
design and act out a mission to Mars, operate a remote controlled Mars
Rover, and more. Come early to receive a special Mars gift!

"How can an ecosystem built on Mars save the Earth?" The answer to this
question and more, will be discussed by a panel that includes award-winning
science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson, NASA scientist Chris McKay, and
others. The panel discussion is free and open to the public, and will be
presented Thursday evening from 8 to 10 p.m.

Visit the Mars Society web site at http://www.marssociety.org for more
information about the upcoming convention, plus a wealth of other
information and on-line resources. Find out why Mars is the place to be in
space!
