Yes Filk is a specific sub-genre of Folk dealing with the music created
for and by Science Fiction/Fantasy Fans. It is not really "officially"
recognized by anyone except Science Fiction/Fantasy Fanndom and you will
never see a Filk section at TowerRecords or Amazon (well almost certainly
not). Much of Filk is based on Parodies although there is a lot more than
that including a lot of very good original work. In one sense everything
the Band does is Filk because the gals are all Science Fiction/Fantasy
Fans but the songs they frequently perform that are most typical of Filk
Music are "Absolutely Bonkers", "The Song of Fey Cross", and Brenda's New
One "A Gown Too Blue".

Every month in Atlanta the local Filk community meets at variuous peoples
houses to hold a "Filk Sing" which is a cross between a Bardic Circle and
Jam session. Anyone can attend and you don't have to perform to go, just
listening is encouraged. Gwen is frequently at the monthly house filks
and Brenda and Theresa have been known to attend as well. If you are
interested in exploring the wonderful world of Filk further and are in
the Atlanta Area the next Housefilk happens to be this weekend although
I'm not certain exactly where it is. Michael Liebman at
sffilk@bellsouth.net coordinates them so send him a message asking about
them and he'll get you directions and any other info you need.
